Meetings are held at 8:00pm on Friday evenings at St John's Hall, Churchfields, Hertford SG13 8AF (near All Saints Church: approach from London Road) unless otherwise stated.

How and why Margaret chooses mono­chrome for landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes; for creative work, pictorial, natural history and travel; and in particular for people and their way of life. Known as "the Welsh Dragon" because of her dragon signature on the back of her prints she has for many years been the go-to person for advice on obtaining photographic distinctions and qualifications. d

An overview of the photo­graphy that Stephen enjoys the most: Landscape and Urban Land­scape Photo­graphy, from across Northern England and Scotland. Images from the Pennines and the Lake District are a mixture of colour and mono­chrome, while his urban landscapes from Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Sheffield and York are mostly in monochrome. D

The Elsden Archive

Cllr Peter Ruffles MBE

Arthur Elsden and his son were photo­graphers in Hertford between 1859 and 1926, and some 250 of their glass slides were given to the Club, early in its life, for safe keeping. Peter knows them well, and will be talking about his favourites.

Nik Collection is a group of plug-in software packages for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and DxO PhotoLab which allow a range of effects to easily be applied to images, in particular to replicate black and white darkroom effects. D

Mike is a Bristol-based photo­grapher who organises studio sessions for his club, volun­teers with the local Photo­grapher's With Disabilities group and mentors individual photo­graphers. He leads the image editing and studio modules in Bristol PS's annual photo­graphy course. His talk will showcase some of his non-portrait photo­graphy, with a step-by-step Photoshop walk-through of some of his creative images, and sharing some of his lockdown projects. D

Iceland is geologically a very young island, formed less than 20 million years ago through volcanic action as the earth's tectonic plates moved apart. This still takes place today, and has resulted in an amazing land­scape of specta­cular features, including lava fields, ice caps and glaciers, snow and ice, hot springs and geysers, waterfalls, black beaches, active volcanoes, the 'Northern Lights' and more.

Astro Photography

Nik Szymanek

Nik will explain the process of capturing astro­nomical images with CCD cameras, a technique he has been using since they were first introduced in the early 1990s. He is a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a member of the British Astronomical Association, and his award-winning image-processing techniques have been used in collaborations with profes­sional astronomers. D

Svalbard, Kingdom of the Ice Bear

This lecture features images from various trips to Svalbard, concentrating on an extended expedition on the historic icebreaker MV Stockholm. The frozen landscapes, seabirds and walrus of the region are covered, but the major focus is on the iconic polar bear.

Our changing environment as affected by eco­nomic and social forces. Over the past 45 years Mike has photographed in the north of England, London, the Upper Lea Valley and across Europe. For more than 30 years he was Curator of Photographs at the Museum of London. D
